A Modern Daydream: Rethinking the Wedding Altar

MOD Design Events unveils Appointments or Else!, a tongue-in-cheek campaign that captures the fiercely glamorous battle between brides determined to secure the perfect wedding date. Blending high fashion with humour, the campaign playfully reminds couples that extraordinary weddings are never created overnight. The story is evident from the title, but to extrapolate on it a bit further, we wanted guests to feel like they are stepping into the light of day onboard a luxury cruise, and when they are stepping indoors, like they are entering the calm and luxurious spaces of their own suites, says Mohammad Alhouri, co-founder of MOD.

This ethos is indeed evident (minus the nautical aspect) in the feelings evoked by the design. Fresh, sharp and full of light. These three words are resounding descriptors of a wedding that feels almost held in time; like a dream of the sea or a memory of a cruise. The Daydream was one of MOD’s most talked-about western-style wedding designs, and its style is relevant to now more than ever.

And that is perhaps centrally due to the style of the altar or backdrop structure for the vows. Clean, sleek and almost dystopian in another shade, this warm and entrancing structure echoed the circular design of the digital wedding invitation that was sent to guests in the form of a customized website. The circle, halved, is left open where the bride and groom stand to symbolize the unity of the whole; thereby creating an eternal circle.The structure towered above the guests, mirrored in the glass-like acrylic catwalk that the bride would walk down. Its simple yet introspective nature redefined how traditional designs could be bypassed while honouring tradition itself.

The key takeaway, however, isn’t to be modern or minimalist. In fact, as far as the design world is concerned, there has been a significant shift away from the cold starkness of minimalism in favour of real character. Think colour, think texture and think joy. However, the style of this altar and the other soft details of this wedding is an example where brides can have the simple and minimalist notes they would like without appearing cold, stark or inauthentic. There are notes of beige in the sofas, hints of wood at the bar and pops of green from the surrounding cacti and blue of the water.

Designing a wedding is so incredibly personal, but no matter how big or small, the key focus remains the same, and that is a night that stays unforgettable for everyone. The guest experience truly took center stage as the sun set, as the guests moved inward to the connected ballroom that displayed a miniature altar detail at the head bridal table. A stage for the scheduled performances and soft boucle dining chairs paired with crème-off-white dining tables created a sense of warmth. This was an event created to celebrate..

The wedding is one amongst MOD’s extensive portfolio of westernised weddings, but this summer we thought it pivotal to highlight its endearing power. The simplicity created through attention to detail, the warmth brought into the space through prioritising the feeling as opposed to a sole focus on aesthetics, and the ability to honour tradition while creating something entirely of its time, this is what made the Daydream so memorable. Perhaps that is the real beauty of the Daydream: not that it abandoned tradition, but that it found a new way to dream within it.
